tips for packing and organizing your storage unit
Make the most of your unit space and keep your items protected. Packing and storing your belongings doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Use our practical tips to maximize your unit space, protect your valuables, and make your move as seamless as possible.
1. Preparation & Packing Essentials
Choose the Right Boxes: Use uniform, sturdy corrugated boxes rather than random grocery store boxes. Uniform sizes stack securely and maximize vertical space in your unit.
Label Everything Clearly: Label every box on top and on at least two sides with its contents and destination room. Mark fragile items clearly on all sides.
Wrap Fragile Items Individually: Use bubble wrap, packing paper, or moving blankets for glassware and delicate items. Avoid old newspapers, as ink can permanently smudge onto china or ceramics.
Never Store Perishables or Hazardous Items: To maintain a clean and safe facility for everyone, do not store food, plants, combustible materials, gasoline, fireworks, or hazardous chemicals.
Loading and maximizing unit space
Put Large & Heavy Items in First: Place large furniture, heavy machinery, or bulky appliances toward the back and along the sides of your unit.
Create a Center Aisle: Leave a straight aisle down the center of your storage unit. This allows quick, easy access to items stored all the way in the back.
Stack from Heavy to Light: Place heavier boxes on the bottom and lighter, more delicate boxes on top to prevent crushing.
Utilize Vertical Space: Stand mattresses, headboards, and tables upright along walls. Fill hollow furniture—like dressers, wardrobes, or washer/dryer drums—with linens, towels, or small boxed items.
3. Protecting Furniture & Vehicles
Cover Your Valuables: Use breathable cotton covers, canvas drop cloths, or moving pads to protect furniture from dust. Avoid sealing wood furniture in tight plastic wrap, which can trap unwanted moisture.
Elevate Items Off the Floor: Place pallets, wooden boards, or plastic sheeting underneath cardboard boxes and mattresses to allow optimal air circulation.
Vehicle Storage Prep: If storing a car, boat, or RV long-term, disconnect the battery, inflate tires to recommended pressures, and add a fuel stabilizer to the gas tank before parking.
